  • on 2 September 1939, Georg Hein adopted "legend" of Peter Stevens; the next day, he enlisted in RAF

  • from 1939 to 1941, he trained as a bomber pilot while the object of a British Police manhunt (enemy alien)

  • 1 April 1941, he joined 144 Squadron and flew 22 combat missions

  • on 6 August 1941, jumped by a German fighter, he crash-landed in England with three injured crewmen (including Wark & Matthews)

  • on 7 September 1941, while on a bomb run over Berlin, hit by flak, and crash-landed at Amsterdam; captured by Nazis next day
