  • sent to Oflag VI-B at Warburg

  • in December 1941, dressed as German guard, marched 10 prisoners out the front gate - "Boldest Escape Bid of the War"

  • moved to Oflag XXI-B at Schubin, Poland

  • in March 1943, with 33 others, escaped through a tunnel under the group latrine

  • recaptured the next day over 300 miles away, he was interrogated by Gestapo, who thought him a spy

  • in April 1943, sent to Stalag Luft 3 at Sagan, Poland (site of The Great Escape)
